A famous square marked by the history of France

Bastille district is marked by the history of France and the Revolution. Place de la Bastille was constructed on the foundations of the old Bastille fortress and prison, both destroyed during the Revolution. A special design in the paving, marks out the contours of the fortress in the current Place de la Bastille. In the middle of the square, the monumental 1840 Colonne de Juillet (July Column) celebrates the overturn of the monarchy of Charles X.

A place to visit

Opposite the metro station stands the Opéra Bastille. This modern opera house that opened in 1989, contrasts sharply with the surrounding architecture. As for nature, tourists enjoy long strolls along the Port de l'Arsenal which links the Canal Saint-Martin to the Seine, or the tree-lined promenade starting at the opera house. Interestingly, every Sunday afternoon, Bastille is the starting point for a 12-mile rollerskating trail through the city. If you love to rollerskate, this weekly event, well-known amongst Parisians, is not to be missed!

An easy-going neighborhood

Bastille metro station is one of the busiest in the capital. It provides access to all four corners of the city via metro lines 1, 5, and 8. In this young neighborhood, you’ll find everything you need: grocery stores, restaurants, supermarkets, news stands, and other local businesses.
