Porte des Lilas: a district under constant development
After being destroyed during World War I, the place where it stood was initially protected and declared 'not for development', but in the end, urban development took over before World War II. Porte de Lilas is actually a huge square (Place du Marquis-du-Vercors) that connects the suburbs to the capital in a very obvious way, as it borders two communes of Seine-Saint-Denis: Les Lilas and Le Pré-St-Gervais.
A Paris gateway that inspires culture
More than just a district of Paris, Porte des Lilas has in the past, inspired many artists. Lovers of culture and history can also find the Centre des Monuments Nationaux in the neighborhood, which lists all of France's historical treasures.
After Serge Gainsbourg sang about it, Philippe Timsit then paid tribute to it in the song Henri, Porte des Lilas. This popular culture later led to the creation of an almost 4-acre garden in honor of the late, great French artist, the 'Jardin Serge Gainsbourg.'
A gateway to Paris where the pedestrian is king
In addition to being served by an entire highway interchange on Boulevard Périphérique, Porte des Lilas offers pedestrians various options. You can get there on metro lines 11 and line 3bis, which run to Porte des Lilas station or, alternatively, take one of several bus lines.
Porte des Lilas is a great place to live, near all the local amenities. It is the perfect place for renting a student apartment in Paris.
