One of the oldest districts in Paris

After Île de la Cité, the Châtelet-Les Halles district, dating back to the 12th century, is the oldest in Paris. In the past, it was even surrounded by wooden fortifications! It was Napoleon III who had the first Forum des Halles built by the architect Baltard in 1850. Strolling around the surrounding streets, you can guess the professions formerly practiced in the area from the street names: Rue du Lard, Rue de la Poterie, Rue de la Ferronnerie, Rue de la Grande Truanderie, Rue de la Lingerie, Rue des Déchargeurs, etc.

A colorful, lively district day and night

Nestled between the Forum des Halles and Île Saint-Louis, Châtelet is a lively district that attracts young people who come there to shop to Forum des Halles, a vast underground shopping mall. Les Halles has the largest multiplex movie theater in Île-de-France, with 26 screens and an indoor swimming pool. Year round, the Châtelet musical theater plays host to internationally renowned concerts and performances. When night falls, the bars are packed and artists invade Place des Halles to take part in shows.

The largest station in Europe

Châtelet-Les Halles is a bustling area where you can find whatever you need, whenever you want: grocery stores, clothing stores, restaurants, bars... In addition, with the largest metro station in Europe, the district has the most transportation connections in the capital. Châtelet and Les Halles, the two stations that are connected underground, offer connections with 5 metro lines (1, 4, 7, 11, and 14) and 3 RER lines (A, B, and D). Every day, more than 750,000 passengers pass through the station!
