Père Lachaise, a lively, pleasant, working class district

The Père Lachaise district occupies one of Paris's seven hills, formerly known as Mont-aux-Vignes, then Mont-Louis. François d'Aix de La Chaise, or Père La Chaise, confessor to king Louis XIV, lived in a religious house constructed on this site. Many insurgents were shot by Versailles troops in front of the cemetery wall, known ever since as the Mur des Fédérés (Communards' Wall). This area is also famous for the Cimetière du Père Lachaise, where many famous figures are buried.

The Père Lachaise district, tracing the footsteps of idols

Listed as a historic monument, Père Lachaise cemetery is an immense gothic garden, with uneven paths lined with trees and plants. It is the final resting place for citizens and famous names such as Victor Hugo, Apollinaire, Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Colette, and Jim Morrison. The cemetery is free to visit and a map is available for purchase at the entrance. Continue your artistic journey with a visit to the engaging Edith Piaf museum. More unusual still, the Père Lachaise district has artist's workshops (painters, sculptors, photographers, engravers, etc.).

Père Lachaise, a well-liked, diverse district

In the Père-Lachaise market, one of the most colorful and picturesque in Paris, a market is held every Tuesday and Friday morning on Boulevard de Ménilmontant, between Rue des Panoyaux and Rue des Cendriers. Stores of all kinds are scattered along the streets. Near Gambetta metro station, there are also plenty of elegant stores.

The district is served by the Père-Lachaise (lines 2 and 3), Philippe-Auguste (line 2), and Gambetta (line 3) metro stations.
