The district is dominated by the dome of the Abbaye du Val de Grâce, commissioned in 1624 by Anne of Austria, the wife of Louis XIII, an act of thanks to God for having finally sent them a son, the future Louis XIV. Since 1793, it has been a military hospital where a room is now reserved for the President of the Republic. Port Royal and its magnificent gardens The long garden known as the "Jardin des Grands Explorateurs" lies in the center of Avenue de l'Observatoire. In the middle stands a large fountain with sculptures by Carpeaux. Wandering around this very French green space, you reach the Jardin du Luxembourg. The classical baroque style Eglise du Val de Grâce has a fabulous fresco in the dome, painted by Mignard. Founded by Colbert in 1667, the Observatoire Paris is recognizable by its verdigris dome, and scientific exhibitions are regularly held there. Gourmet shopping in the Port Royal district A twice-weekly market is held on Boulevard de Port-Royal, alongside the Hôpital du Val de Grâce. Rue Saint-Jacques, a great place for shopping, has everything you need. One place worth noting is the Jean-Marie Charcellay butcher shop (263 Rue Saint-Jacques). The district is served by Port-Royal RER station (line B) and Raspail (lines 4 and 6) and Saint-Jacques (line 6) metro stations.
