Not far from the trendy tumult of Oberkampf, Parmentier is quieter but still full of life. An excellent compromise for a cool trip to the capital with the chance to sleep in peace! Formerly a working class area, the Parmentier district was the seat of many popular revolts in the 19th century. Long characterized by great social diversity, the Parmentier district has modernized, attracting dynamic executives, professionals, and young couples who love Parisian life. Parmentier, a district perfect for sauntering With no great monuments or architectural masterpieces, the Parmentier district is simply a pleasant corner of the capital where some of the old spirit of working class Paris still lingers. The area is great for strolling around. You might just discover a welcoming bar, an inexpensive restaurant, or a marvelous little shop. To the south of the district, Square Maurice Gardette (2 Rue du Général Blaise) has large trees of various species, flower beds, an old bandstand, a playground, and paths for skaters and bikes. A little ways outside the Parmentier district, just to the south, stands the unusual little Musée du Fumeur (Smoking Museum), at 7 Rue Paché. Parmentier, a cultural melting pot This cosmopolitan district has stores with a thousand flavors. For Italian produce, try the tasty Cooperativa Latte Cisternino (108 Rue Saint Maur). Just opposite, the Bague de Kenza, a fabulous Algerian pastry shop, is also tempting. The district is served by the Parmentier and Saint-Maur metro stations (line 3), as well as Saint-Ambroise station (line 9).
