A place of architectural master piece
The current government building is a reproduction of the building designed by Chambiges and de Cortone during the Renaissance, which caught fire during the 1871 Commune episode. Although the building still houses Paris government offices, it is also famous for the many exhibitions held there. In particular, there is an exhibition on the history of Paris's institutions. In addition, its splendid rooms are open to the public. In the winter, Parisians and tourists alike have been coming to enjoy the large ice rink for many years. In the summer, the rink makes way for a large stage for concerts.
The perfect location for visiting Paris
Around Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, Rue de Rivoli, which leads to the Louvre, offers a good view from a beautiful, green setting of the Saint-Jacques Tower, a stunning Gothic building which used to be a meeting point for pilgrims setting off for Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. Then, Rue Beaubourg leads to the Centre d’Art Moderne Georges Pompidou. A small detour takes you to another flamboyant, Gothic building: the Eglise Saint-Merri and behind the government building, the Eglise Saint-Gervais conceals its Gothic structure.
A very accessible neighborhood
You get splendid views walking along the Seine between the Arcole and Notre-Dame bridges. Because of its central location and the various things going on, the Hôtel de Ville district is naturally well served by public transport. Hôtel de Ville metro station is served by lines 1 and 11. There are also a lot of bus connections in Place de la Mairie and even if you aren't going there for a shopping trip, the Hôtel de Ville bazaar (BHV) is worth a visit: this large store has had a heritage emblematic of the area since it opened in 1856.
