The Madeleine, a place marked by good taste and good living Rent a vacation apartment in the area of Paris surrounding the Eglise de la Madeleine and you'll be able to enjoy good food and other French pleasures. Bourgeois Paris, the ambition of the 19th century The Madeleine district is one of the most stylish in Paris. In literature, it is also a symbol of social success. On the steps of La Madeleine, de Maupassant’s character Bel Ami used to look with ambition at the Assemblée Nationale along Rue Royale. Across from here, the Obélisque stands on Place de la Concorde, and you can catch a glimpse of the dome of Les Invalides. Place de la Madeleine has the most sought-after delicatessens in Paris: Hédiard, the Maison de la Truffe, and Fauchon. The Grands Boulevards that branch off from the Madeleine are home to department stores and famous boutiques. A consumer location for the bourgeois classes, the district is a historical extension of the monarchical Paris that surrounds the Louvre. It is no coincidence that Longchamp, L'Oréal, and Hermès all have stores on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Chanel is also based on Rue Royale, together with other big fashion names. Enjoy the atmosphere of the Grands Boulevards. The Eglise de la Madeleine was actually a Greek-style temple dedicated to the glory of Napoleon's great army. It became a church in 1842. Inside you can admire a magnificent sculpture by François Rude, the Baptism of Christ. The work looks out on Rue Royale and its luxury boutiques. This is also the site of the Musée Bouilhet-Christofle, which pays tribute to 150 years of the gold and silversmith trade. A few hundred yards from La Madeleine, the Cité du Retiro is worth a visit. It is the former Cour des Coches, which used to house the king's coaches. On Boulevard de la Madeleine, why not make a reservation for an evening at the Olympia, one of Paris's legendary theaters? Opposite stands the Théâtre de la Madeleine. Amenities and connections You can, of course, do your shopping near the Madeleine, but the prices are naturally higher than elsewhere.
