The lively boulevards of Paris The Grands Boulevards district takes its name from the large roads running through it. Built at the end of the 17th century, it runs the length of the main boulevards of several arrondissements: from Madeleine to Place de la République, passing through Opéra, the Bonne Nouvelle hill, and Porte Saint-Denis. The atmosphere is much more working class between Saint-Denis and République than in the first section of the Grands Boulevards, between Madeleine and Opéra, famed for its illustrious past. The Grands Boulevards symbolize the glory the area enjoyed during the 19th century. Place de l'Opéra is a fine example of the work done by the architect Haussmann throughout the area. Boulevard des Italiens used to be the place where the extravagant Merveilleuses and Incroyables strutted their stuff. Yet more astonishing is the fact that the very first movie screening was held by the Lumière brothers in 1895 at number 14, Boulevard des Capucines! A pleasant walk around Paris's main streets The Grands Boulevards/Bonne Nouvelle district is home to department stores, restaurants, and theaters. The Rex on Boulevard Poissonnière is one of the largest theaters in Paris. Close by, the famous Folies-Bergères music hall has been all the rage since it opened in 1869.
