In the past, it was even surrounded by wooden fortifications! It was Napoleon III who had the first Forum des Halles built by the architect Baltard in 1850. It then became an imposing metal structure, which housed a huge indoor food market. Due to the crowds, the market was moved to Rungis, and the Baltard pavilions were demolished or moved. The present Forum des Halles, a vast underground shopping mall, was then built in its place.
