Its glass and metal structure, reminiscent of the industrial era, was not to everybody's taste. A controversial monument that has won popularity The Centre Georges-Pompidou, opened in 1977, is the heart of the Beaubourg district. This contemporary structure rises above the district like a gas plant. Once long criticized, the building is now a symbol of modernity and daring. The Centre Georges-Pompidou houses the Musée National d’Art Moderne and a public library. As well as the vast collection of modern and contemporary art that is updated every year, the center has a movie theater, temporary exhibitions, workshops, shows, and events. Next to the center, the Stravinsky fountain appeals to curious minds. This multicolored basin is made up of moving sculptures by artists Niki de Saint Phalle and Tinguely. A district with easy access Right in the heart of Paris, Beaubourg's main transportation hub is Rambuteau metro station, served by line 11. A little way to the west, Châtelet-les-Halles station is the busiest in the capital with 5 metro lines: 1, 4, 7, 11, and 14, as well as the RER A, B, and D.
